ACT/SAT/PSAT Prep

We all know how vital high standardized test scores such as the SAT and the ACT are to the college admissions process.  However, by contrast, few parents fully appreciate just how critically important a good score is in the college funding process.  Simply put, a marginal improvement in your child’s SAT or ACT score can mean the difference between thousands if not tens of thousands of additional free money for college!

The fact is, your college-bound child may already be eligible for many scholarships, especially institutional merit aid offered at many colleges and universities around the country.  Eligibility for most of these merit aid awards include, among many other factors, minimum SAT/ACT requirements.  Even a modest score increase of 100, 150, or 200 points can put your family in the running for potentially tens of thousands of dollars in gift aid for which you would not have been otherwise eligible.

This is particularly true for National Merit Scholarships offered to National Merit Finalists by hundreds of colleges and universities around the country.  These scholarships can mean as much as a guaranteed four-year full-tuition waiver (at the University of Alabama, for example) or half-tuition waivers (at the University of Southern California, for example), which translates to over $80,000 off the cost of attendance!   The first step towards qualifying for these highly desirable scholarships is to obtain a qualifying score on the PSAT when the student is a junior in high school.  The minimum cut-offs are determined annually for each graduating class, and are different for each state.  The importance of making the first cut — earning the minimum PSAT score to become a National Merit Semi-finalist — cannot be over-emphasized.  While the PSAT is technically not required nor considered for college admissions purposes, early preparation for the PSAT and recognition of its importance are critical to maximizing scholarship opportunities.
